The School of Sports and Health Engineering at Taiyuan University of Technology was established in August 2004. The school comprises two functional departments: the Operations Support Office and the Student Affairs Office. It also includes four academic departments: the Department of Physical Education, the Department of Sports Training, the Public Physical Education Teaching Division, and the Competition Training Division. These units are primarily responsible for teaching, training, organizing, and managing competitions for the Physical Education and Sports Training programs, public physical education courses, high-level sports teams, and mass sports activities across the university.
The school currently has 91 faculty and staff members, including 82 full-time teachers and researchers. Among them, there are 8 professors, 26 associate professors, 18 individuals with doctoral degrees, and 53 with master’s degrees. The school also boasts 25 master’s degree supervisors. The faculty is highly qualified, featuring senior experts who enjoy special government allowances from the State Council, provincial-level teaching masters, and specialized talents such as international referees, FIFA referee technical instructors, AFC national-level professional coaches, and national-level elite athletes.
Over the years, the faculty and students of the school have upheld the sports spirit of “tenacious perseverance, striving for excellence, and teamwork.” They have achieved remarkable results in party building, teaching and research, student affairs, and the development of high-level sports teams, making significant contributions to the harmonious, rapid, and leapfrog development of the university. Two teachers from the school have been awarded the title of “National Excellent Teacher,” one has been recognized as a “Provincial-Level Teaching Master” and “Outstanding Educator of Shanxi Province,” and many others have received honors such as “Provincial Model of Three Types of Education,” “Provincial Excellent Class Advisor,” and “National Excellent Coach.” The school has also been honored with numerous accolades, including “Outstanding Higher Education Institution in Implementing the ‘Regulations on School Physical Education Work’,” “National Advanced Collective for Student Physical Fitness Monitoring,” “Provincial Advanced Collective for Three Types of Education in Shanxi,” and “Provincial Advanced Grassroots Unit for Faculty Ethics and Conduct in Higher Education.”
In recent years, guided by the educational philosophy of “putting people first, using sports and culture as a vehicle to foster moral and intellectual development, and achieving comprehensive growth,” the school has accurately positioned itself and pursued scientific development, successfully establishing a path to excellence in sports education within a science and engineering university. The Physical Education program is recognized as a provincial and national first-class discipline. The public physical education teaching has consistently ranked first in evaluations organized by Shanxi Province. In student evaluations of undergraduate teaching, the school’s teachers have consistently ranked at the top in teaching assessments for foundational courses, compulsory professional courses, elective professional courses, and public elective courses, earning widespread praise from students across the university. The school has achieved one second prize in National Teaching Achievements, two special prizes and two first prizes in Shanxi Provincial Teaching Achievements, four second prizes, and has developed four provincial-level high-quality courses. In research, the school has made significant strides, undertaking over 100 provincial and ministerial-level research projects, publishing more than 100 papers in core journals, and winning one second prize in the Shanxi Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards. Additionally, over 500 high-level academic papers have been published in domestic and international journals such as CSSCI, SSCI, and SCI, and more than 100 monographs and textbooks, including those designated for the 11th and 12th Five-Year Plans, have been published. Graduate education has grown rapidly from scratch, and the school now holds the authority to confer first-level master’s degrees in Sports Science and professional master’s degrees in Sports. The school has maintained uninterrupted student physical fitness monitoring for over 30 years, with research based on this data yielding significant results.
The high-level sports teams of the college have achieved remarkable accomplishments. Teams such as the university men's basketball team have demonstrated fearlessness in the face of strong opponents and tenacious fighting spirit, securing gold and silver medals in national competitions with outstanding performances. The university men's basketball team is the only team in the country to have advanced to the top eight of the CUBAL (Chinese University Basketball Association League) for eighteen consecutive sessions. It has claimed the Northwest Division championship eighteen times, earning the title "King of the Northwest." The team won the national championship twice, in 2010 and 2012, and finished as national runner-up in 2008, 2014, 2016, and 2024.The university men's football team secured second place in the National College Football League three times, in 2006, 2010, and 2011. In 2017, the team clinched the CUFL (Chinese University Football League) national championship, making our university the only institution in the country to have won national championships in both men's basketball and men's football, two major team sports.The university women's basketball team once finished as the national runner-up in the 6th CUBA (Chinese University Basketball Association) and has won the Northwest Division championship twice. The women's volleyball team earned a third-place finish in the National University Games. Athletes in martial arts, swimming, track and field, and other sports have also claimed championships in international and national competitions.The university men's basketball, men's football, women's volleyball, and martial arts teams have been honored with awards such as the "Shanxi Province May Fourth Youth Award," "Shanxi Province Top Ten Youth Exemplary Groups," "Shanxi Province Youth Shock Team," and "Special Contribution Award for the University Games."At the 13th National Student Games of the People's Republic of China in 2017 and the 14th National Student Games in 2021, our university was twice awarded the "President's Cup," the highest honor for school sports achievements, solidifying its reputation as a powerhouse in Chinese university sports.(Data updated in December 2025)
